Meet Martha Washington

Kim Wolf wrote to tell us about a very special CGC dog.  Meet “Martha Washington,” who just passed her Canine Good Citizen test at the age of 10!

Kim adopted Martha from Philadelphia Animal Control when she was 8 years old.  In the two years Kim and Martha W. have been together, Martha has volunteered as a therapy dog with The Good Dog Foundation and Therapy Dogs Incorporated, and she’s the spokesdog for senior pit bulls at ELDERBULLS.

Senior dogs ROCK!!

  1. How wonderful! anything ‘we’ can do to further dispell some of the bad press this breed and others of similar types have been subjected for so many years is indeed a major step in the right direction. Congratulations on your accomplishments with Martha.

Way to go, Martha Washington!! I, too, have a senior dog who just passed her CGC. Angel is a nine year old husky/shepherd mix that I “inherited” from my mother who passed away in January, 2011. Angel became a member of my pack in April 2009 when Mom moved in with me. As her health deteriorated, she spent much time in the hospital and skilled nursing facilities where Angel and my 3 other dogs visited her and other residents and staff. Angel passed here CGC on April 14, 2012. She is off-leash trained in obedience and loves to go camping with me and the rest of the pack. Yes, senior dogs rock!!!

She is beautiful, congrats to both of you. I am currently working with my 1yr old rescued pit on achieving her CGC and hopefully her Therapy dog cert in a few years. Can anyone suggest a place where on can buy a plain service dog type vest..so that I can put a sign on her that says..I’m in training ..please ask me to sit and stay before petting” People are so gushy when they see her..because she’s so damn cute LOL, but it is hard to reinforce the sit and stay part of the training when the strangers get down on their knees and start kissing on her. I figure is she has a vest perhaps they will stop and help the situation. I have found several places to buy actual service vests but that they all say service dog..and they are very expensive. I will probably have to just make one but I want it to look official enough to get the strangers take notice. Not sure if you can help me but perhaps someone with this page can.. Keep up the great work with Martha…she is helping the breed each and everyday by her great example.
    Thanks
    Eileen
